Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)
Sustainable Development Practices through Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women
2015 marks the expiration of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In turn, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have become crucial to the renewal of international development policies. This year, 2015 HSMUN ECOSOC committee will highlight a much-discussed topic in the UN, which is the connection between sustainable development, gender equality and empowering women. Studies show that reducing the length of distance women and girls must travel for water increases school attendance by 12%. In Mauritania, households can sell a large number of loaves of bread through solar powered ovens. Through UNDP’s “Urban Partnerships in Poverty Reduction,” women turned slums into small businesses. How can we, despite all odds, continue to find innovative solutions, and make remarkable progress?

Hello guys, and welcome to 2015 HSMUN! My name is Richard Chao and you can also call me Ricardo. I’m currently a freshman studying international business in NTU and I enjoy my free time reading magazines, novels and journals online, National Geographic and The Economist are my favorites.
Actually, I started attending MUN conferences only by the time I entered university. However, as I participated in MUN conferences in the past semesters, I had significantly enhanced my perspectives on international affairs and global politics. It is sure that MUN has offered me opportunities to learn, make friends and enjoy myself during the MUN conferences at the same time. I’d like to welcome you guys to join the HSMUN and have fun with us, and we’re sure that you’ll earn yourself a great experience! “We met as strangers. We grew up as friends.” Glad to meet you guys in the summer time!!! |
Assistant Chair
Scully Chen |
Hello dear delegates! I’m Scully Chen, currently a sophomore majoring in Agricultural Economics. I love singing and playing volleyball. It’s my great pleasure to serve as your assistant chair in ECOSOC, HSMUN 2015. It’s not until I was in university that I know Model UN, so I think you are all extremely lucky to have the opportunity to participate in this meaningful event at an early age. I think MUN not only provides me with the chance to practice English-speaking skills but also makes me a more convincing person; moreover, I have become more sensitive to international affairs. I believe when you start your journey of MUN, you will definitely obtain unforgettable memories and have great progresses in many aspects. I hope that you will really have fun, make many friends and learn a lot in HSMUN! Let us arise and shine together! I really can’t wait to see you guys :)
