A Letter from the Director of Academics
Distinguished Delegates,
I am Natasha Chou, currently a rising junior majoring in Political Science, focusing on International Relations in National Taiwan University, and I will be serving as the Director of Academics in HSMUN 2015. On behalf of the Department of Academics, I hereby extend our sincere welcome to all the delegates.
Just a while ago my friends were asking me what Model United Nation is, and as I was trying to explain to them, I realized that I wasn’t able to respond to this simple question in just a few words. My answer went from a few sentences to a long speech on my wonderful experience in the exciting conferences, and the precious friendships I had built through out the journey. Because MUN is highly related to my major and courses I learn in school, MUN is merely just an extra-curricular activity to me. It shapes and reforms my vision of the world, and allows me to understand the complex world issues with more care and diverse perspectives. I am really glad that all the delegates can begin your own journey to explore the world at the stage of high school. I along with my team of HSMUN 2015 will strive to bring the life-altering MUN experience to you just like MUN has brought so much to me.
This year, we have set up four committees that will each address different pressing issues in our society. In the Social, Cultural, Humanitarian Committee, delegates will discuss the basic human rights in the LGBT community, and fight for the equality and justice they deserve. In the Commission of Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, the persistent yet unsolved problem of human trafficking will be addressed with more focus on the protection of the victims. Delegates in the Economic and Social Council will be given the opportunity to practice sustainable development, and at the same time promote gender equality and empower women. Last but not least, the United Nations Security Council will shoulder the responsibility to tackle terrorism in the African region with more adaptive approaches that meet the needs of people in the area.
Aside from the conferences, there will also be a lecture on the Rules of Procedures, and a special event for delegates to explore the prospect after the expiration of the Millennium Development Goal. We wish all the delegates the best with your preparation for the conferences, and we hope that you can all bring home your own unique and enjoyable experience of HSMUN 2015.
I look forward to seeing all of you in July!
Best regards,
Natasha, Yu-Ting Chou
